A beautiful poem written and spoken for Danny and Laura, on their wedding day
……
“Boulder in May, June in Tucson” by Martha Elizabeth
Boulder in May – the mountains here are blue, green-plum
as Danny painted them, the humidity smudging the sky
as if some god conjured the horizon
through squinted eyes. These piles of rock –
cliffs breaking through ripped stockings
of forest – these can’t have the same creator
as the mountains of Tucson, which glint not with water
but with desert stone, gold-capped teeth
in the parched mouth of Arizona.
Boulder in May is staged for a wedding: even now
the sounds of water surround us; the trees lean in, curious
and swooned; animal sounds taken up by Spring as if instruments.
But I was born in the desert
so different from here, that crooked smile
of stone jutting up from earth, a reminder
that the landscapes of our lives can change so quickly.
I have seen things die in the desert, can look
at an animal and know that it takes to survive it –
the javelina’s hooved cast iron feet, or the rose-tan
skin of a rattlesnake, which even in a line
of a poem curls, hidden. There are those that are built
for sparsity –
I think of a cactus, just now: somehow green
despite the dust it settles into
spines like a crown, arms reaching out
to a perpetual sky, that denies its blue water
for weeks, or months, and still offers
a yellow flower, its gift for what exactly?
I look to you:
who is blooming now in a Boulder spring
hair alight like creeping barberry and blanketflower,
in this time of plenty and know
what stores of love are hidden deep inside your saguaro belly
so that he may turn to you
in times of draught and gather cactus flower,
draw deep drafts of cool pools when all else is barren.
And I look to you:
solid as blue spruce
and see that you’re built for the badlands, your shoulders
made to hug her in dry sun for shade – a familiar wrist
bearing fruit despite seasons of sand.
That is to say:
you can thrive anywhere, together in growth.
So this, here
is not the sound of muted river
or mountain rain;
it is not the wreaths of mist on our heads;
not the hymns of wrens;
it is not a champagne bubble
or even joy in dancing, no –
it is a knowledge of an unyielding and inevitable desert
a horizon that gives nothing but sun and dust
and cut into the sky’s bone-dry blue
are Danny and Laura, in full blossom
despite.
